Osho on Euthanasia (in Osho style)

"Beloved ones, let us understand something very fundamental.
Life is not a problem to be solved — it is a mystery to be lived.
And death, too, is part of that mystery."

Politicians are very strange people.
They cannot manage life — education is collapsing, hospitals are sick, society is neurotic —
but suddenly they become very eager to manage death.

It is as if a blind man is confidently offering to lead you across the road.

Now they say: “We will help you to die with dignity.”
And I laugh, because these are the same people who never helped you to live with dignity.

If society were compassionate, if we understood silence, meditation, love,
then death would be a flowering — not something to legislate, not something to execute.
Death would come naturally, like an autumn leaf falling when its time has come.

But this law…
This law is dangerous because it pretends to be compassion while coming from the mind of bureaucracy.
And the mind of bureaucracy knows only one thing: control.
Control of birth, control of life, and now — control of death.

"When existence wants you to be here, you are here.
When existence wants you to leave, you leave."

This is the way of Tao, the way of the mystics.

But the law is not Tao.
The law is not compassion.
The law is society trying to tidy up something it never understood.

And remember, beloved ones:
The moment the state decides who may die and when,
a small crack appears —
and through that crack, the cold wind of manipulation can enter.

First they will say, “Only for the suffering.”
Then they will say, “Only for the old.”
Then perhaps, “Only for the useless, the unproductive, the inconvenient.”
That is how power always expands — step by step, quietly, politely.

I am not against death.
Death is beautiful when lived consciously.
I am against unconsciousness pretending to be mercy.

If a man or woman is in deep pain and wants to leave the body,
it should be an intimate, sacred decision —
a decision made in meditation,
in awareness,
not through paperwork and signatures and committees of experts
who themselves have never tasted the silence of the inner being.

"Life and death are two wings of the same bird."
Let them be free.
Do not let governments cut those wings
in the name of dignity.
